Course Description:

In 2011, the Fernie Writers’ Conference will again be offering a Youth Writing section for 15 – 18 year-old youth writers from throughout the Kootenays and Southern Alberta.

This three-day course will provide an opportunity for students to improve their fiction and non-fiction writing skills though direct instruction and group workshops. Students will participate in conference events including panel discussions, public readings and a specific youth-oriented Q & A with published authors.

Instruction modules over the three days include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Ideas – Finding them and getting them down on paper
• Observing the world as a writer
• First draft and revisions
• Voice and Point of View
• Structure and Organization
• Imagery and metaphor
• Theme
• Preparing for publication
• Preparation for public reading events

This will be an interactive course, flexible to the interests and needs of the individual students.

Classes will run from 1pm- 5pm Thursday July 21 and 9am-1pm Friday and Saturday, leaving the afternoons free for participants to attend one-on-one workshop sessions with the instructor and/or daily panels with authors and industry insiders. The time can also be spent writing, or checking out the many summer activities Fernie has to offer.
