Poetry - Writing in Place

Course instructor:
Alison Calder
Course date:
Wednesday, July 20, 2011 - Saturday, July 23, 2011

Course Description:

This poetry seminar, suitable for emerging writers as well as more experienced ones, focuses on using particular places to spark and shape your writing. Participants will spend the first two days of the seminar doing place-related writing exercises and discussing broad creative issues. The third day is dedicated as a writing day where you will be free to write surrounded by the natural beauty of Fernie. On the final day the group will meet to workshop your new writing. This unique structure provides both the inspiration for new work, and the time to produce and critique it. How can poets incorporate specific aspects of a place into their writing? How might you filter your writing through a place, and what do you gain or lose by doing so? How have writers expressed both natural and built environments, and what are the ethics behind that? While the emphasis in this seminar will be on producing new work, participants will be able to use these ideas in their revision processes as well.
