Fiction Writing

Course date:
Monday, July 19, 2010 - Saturday, July 24, 2010

Course Description:

Steven Heighton’s fiction-writing workshop will combine two main elements: first, daily seminars/discussions about key elements of fiction, and, second, the traditional “workshopping” of participant writing. Heighton will also propose--rather than assign--certain exercises that particpants will find enjoyable, and inspring, rather than punitive. The seminar/discussions will include: “Writing as Re-enaction,” “Flash Characterization,” “The Indirect Art of Dialogue,” “Different Drivers: Forms of Fiction,” “Unsung Joys of the Micro-Edit,” “Plot vs. Story,” “Publishing the Work” and, possibly, other impromptu discussions, depending on the needs and requests of the group and the trajectory of the workshop.

Course Preparation:

We request that participants submit a short story or an excerpt of a novel one month prior to the start date that they wish to work on during this session. The class will be be workshopping these submissions and one on one feedback will be provided by the instructor. These excerpts will be distributed to all participants and the instructor in advance of the Conference. Submission details will be provided in your registration package.
