Fiction - Fabricating Fiction
In this workshop we’ll explore, and learn to employ more effectively, four of fiction’s most powerful (and often underestimated) devices: Dialogue, Narrative Voice, the Carrying Metaphor, and the Telling Detail.
We’ll also cover, as needed, the rest of the toolkit: beginnings & endings, character definition, story arc/plot development, perspective, time frame and point of view.
Everyone will get at least two opportunities to have their writing workshopped by the group – more if we can manage it. There will be one-on-one sessions with the instructor to address each writer’s more individual needs. Roughly halfway along, one full day will be set aside to give everyone some more sustained writing time. Toward the end we’ll cover some of the nuts & bolts of marketing fiction. And if we get the time, why not stretch a little and examine some hybrids: docu-fiction, the nonfiction story, the micro-novel, graphic fiction. Flash-fiction, anyone? There’s only one rule: if it works, it’s legit.
